Local MP Jeremy Hunt is to meet with the Chief Executive of Surrey County Council in February to question him over the way Surrey County Council dealt with the recent snow fall. This meeting could not come at a better time given that snow has fallen again this week and caused mayhem on the roads in and around Haslemere. Jeremy has been inundated with correspondence from concerned constituents, some of whom were stranded in their homes for days as access roads were not cleared. Although the weather was extreme and a national salt shortage limited supplied around the county there are lessons to be learned for next time particularly in the case of how information is communicated and how roads are prioritised.
Jeremy said: “I realise that Surrey County Council were extremely stretched during the recent snow fall but that does not mean lessons should not be learned for next time. I want to work with the Council and local councillors to discuss how road clearing is prioritised and how we can improve the response when we get our next patch of freak weather – which I have no doubt will happen sooner or later. I also want to ask David McNulty if communication networks can be improved so that people know what to do in these situations. It is crucial that the rural nature of South West Surrey is appreciated when the County Council makes its contingency plans for the whole county”.
