JEREMY DISAPPOINTED AT MILFORD TESCO DECISION

October 2009: Jeremy discusses Tesco expansion plans in Milford with local shopkeepers

Jeremy has spoken of his disappointment following the news that Tesco have been given permission to open an Express store in Milford.  Jeremy has been backing a campaign started by Cllr John Sandy to oppose the new store on the site of the Red Lion pub. A recent survey distributed around local stores returned an overwhelming 2300 oppositions from local residents.  Cllr Sandy used his powers as a member of Waverley to call the decision in but at a council meeting on Wednesday night the store was given the go ahead.

Speaking about the news Jeremy said: “I am bitterly disappointed that the overwhelming opposition to this plan has been ignored.  As well as being a very special village, Milford has some excellent local shops and I hope that villagers continue to use these. I will be working with Cllr Sandy to support local businesses and encourage customer loyalty and I am confident that with continued local use Milford’s shops can carry on thriving”.

The Red-Lion disused site was an absolute eye-sore. Tesco has done an excellent job to produce a store that blends in beautifully. As a local, this store is necessary to provide the range for a shopper that wants convenience goods. Therefore, I can't see how this store will affect the specialists store such as Secretts, the butchers, the pharmacy, etc. as specialist shoppers (particularly in this affluent area) will always need these type of shops. The only one in danger is the Co-op, and lets face it, that isn't great!

A good planning decision for job creation, good choice for customers, I am sure it will be very busy. If you are a good local trader it will benefit your business. There is a Tesco Express on the Ridgeway in Farnham the butchers and bakers next door do excellent business I often see queues out their doors.

how about a co op on that site? the corner shop seems a bit on the small side and a move across the road would surely create more work for local people without threatening local businesses.

I AM VERY PLEASED THAT THE TESCO STORE HAS BEEN GIVEN PERMISION TO OPEN IN MILFORD ,AS WE NEED MORE SHOPS IN THE VILLAGE .ITS A LOT BETTTER TO HAVE A SHOP RATHER THAN AN EMPTY BUILDING AND IT WILL CREATE JOBS.PEOPLE WILL ALSO HAVE MORE CHOICE.
